Microsoft Excel is one of the most widely used spreadsheet applications for data analysis, financial modeling, and record-keeping. However, losing unsaved data due to an unexpected crash, system reboot, or accidental closure can be frustrating. Fortunately, Excel provides multiple ways to recover unsaved files, ensuring that users can retrieve their work with minimal hassle.

Methods to Restore an Unsaved Excel File

1. Recover Unsaved Files Using AutoRecover

Excel has an in-built feature called AutoRecover that periodically saves a backup of your work in case of unexpected interruptions. To use this feature:

How to restore an unsaved excel file?

Open Microsoft Excel

Click on File > Open

Select Recover Unsaved Workbooks at the bottom of the Recent section

A list of unsaved files will appear. Choose the relevant file and click Open

Save the file immediately by selecting File > Save As

2. Check the AutoRecover File Location

If AutoRecover does not appear when you reopen Excel, you can manually check for the recovery files:

Open Excel and go to File > Options

Click Save on the left panel

Locate the AutoRecover file location under "Save workbooks"

Copy the path and open File Explorer

Paste the path into the address bar and press Enter

Look for files with the .xlsb or .xlsx extension and open them

3. Use the Document Recovery Pane

If Excel crashes unexpectedly, it may automatically display a Document Recovery pane the next time you open the application. This pane lists any recovered files that were unsaved before the crash.

Open Excel

If the Document Recovery Pane appears, review the available files

Click on the desired file to open it

Save it immediately by selecting File > Save As

4. Restore from Temporary Files

Excel saves temporary files as a backup in case of crashes. These can sometimes be used to recover unsaved work.

Steps to Find Temporary Files

Open File Explorer

Navigate to C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles

Look for .tmp or .xlsx files that match the date and time of your lost document

Rename the file and change the extension from .tmp to .xlsx

Open the file in Excel and save it

5. Recover Using Previous Versions

If you have saved the file before but lost recent changes, Windows has a File History feature that may allow you to recover an earlier version.

Locate the saved version of the file in File Explorer

Right-click the file and select Properties

Go to the Previous Versions tab

Choose an available version and click Restore

6. Search for Backup Files (.xlb or .xlsb)

Some versions of Excel automatically create backup files that can be used to restore unsaved data.

Open File Explorer

Search for files with the extension .xlb or .xlsb

If found, open the file and save it as a new document
